Come celebrate the release of our new album, Passos Brasileiros (Brazilian Steps)! Passos Brasileiros honors rich musical legacy, this concert features Toomai’s original arrangements of popular songs by Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, and Dona Ivone Lara (the “First Lady of Samba”); jazz-influenced works by Hermeto Pascoal and Léa Freire; and classical selections by Chiquinha Gonzaga, Heitor Villa-Lobos, and Paulinho Nogueira. Passos Brasileiros embraces works from several beloved Brazilian traditions—choro, samba, Brazilian jazz, classical music, and Música Popular Brasileira (MPB)—and reinvents them for string quintet.

For the final show of our September residency at Barbès, we will present an exciting array of Cuban and Mexican works. Tonight, we'll feature the music of Ernesto Lecuona and Manuel Ponce, two composers inspired by traditional music, who penned some of most beloved melodies of their respective countries.

During the first thirty years of the the 20th century, Ernesto Lecuona and Manuel Ponce not only built on the folk traditions of their countries, but they also created musical innovations that are ingrained in the cultural identities of Cuba, Mexico, and Latin America as a whole. Toomai teams up with Soprano Camille Zamora in the first day of our residency at Jacobi. We're working with the staff for "Domestic Violence Awareness Month," participating in a series of hospital activities that aim create a safe environment and help to inspire and empower victims of abuse. We'll be playing music by Luigi Boccherini, Beny Moré, Henry Purcell, G.F. Handel, Manuel M. Ponce, and more. We have a public performance in the Hospital Atrium at 12:00 PM, and all are welcome to come listen to beautiful music and show support for the Domestic Violence Awareness Project.
