Residency at Barbès, Brooklyn, NYC, Show 4: A Tribute to Two Latin American Icons: Lecuona and Ponce

For the final show of our September residency at Barbès, we will present an exciting array of Cuban and Mexican works. Tonight, we'll feature the music of Ernesto Lecuona and Manuel Ponce, two composers inspired by traditional music, who penned some of most beloved melodies of their respective countries.

In the third installment of Toomai's Barbès residency, we are joined by special guest violinist and composer Mazz Swift. This evening, we will pair new songs by Swift herself, Hamilton Berry (our very own!), and Jessica Pavone with Renaissance madrigals by Carlo Gesualdo, Adrian Willaert, and Thomas Weelkes.

Tonight's concert—the first of our month long residency at Barbès—will give an eclectic preview of what's to come later in September. We'll play selections from our new album Cuerdas Cubanas, string arrangements of traditional Romanian music, and a collection of original songs by our own cellist Hamilton Berry and other special guest songwriters.

Come immerse yourselves in the music of Cuba and celebrate the release of our brand-new album, Cuerdas Cubanas! This show features modern string arrangements of legendary songs by Ernesto Lecuona as well as salsa, bolero, and mambo classics.

During the first thirty years of the the 20th century, Ernesto Lecuona and Manuel Ponce not only built on the folk traditions of their countries, but they also created musical innovations that are ingrained in the cultural identities of Cuba, Mexico, and Latin America as a whole. In this program, Toomai will perform original arrangements of Lecuona's and Ponce's important piano works, along with works by composers who were influenced by these icons of Latin American music.

Toomai teams up with Soprano Camille Zamora in the first day of our residency at Jacobi. We're working with the staff for "Domestic Violence Awareness Month," participating in a series of hospital activities that aim create a safe environment and help to inspire and empower victims of abuse. We'll be playing music by Luigi Boccherini, Beny Moré, Henry Purcell, G.F. Handel, Manuel M. Ponce, and more. We have a public performance in the Hospital Atrium at 12:00 PM, and all are welcome to come listen to beautiful music and show support for the Domestic Violence Awareness Project.

Jessica Pavone has written this new song cycle as a follow up to her successful "Songs of Synastry and Solitude," which we premiered and recorded for Tzadik in 2009. This new work will have a string quartet with members of Toomai, as well as guitar, drums, and voice.
